About Sutter Independent Physicians (SIP)

What is Sutter Independent Physicians (SIP)?
Sutter Independent Physicians is an independent practice association of primary care and specialist physicians affiliated with Sutter Health. SIP’s more than 500 physicians serve over 100,000 patients in Sacramento, Yolo and Placer counties.
What is an Independent Practice Association (IPA)? An IPA is a corporation made up of independent physicians who maintain their independent practices but participate in the IPA to secure managed care business. The IPA provides services to managed care organizations on a negotiated per capita rate, flat retainer fee, or negotiated fee-for-service basis.
What Are the Benefits of Being an Independent Physician?
Independent physicians enjoy the flexibility that comes with being the owner of their own business; they decide how much they work, what their hours of operation will be, and how they’ll schedule their patients. Many independent physicians appreciate the freedom to create their own culture.
What Kind of Support is Available to SIP Physicians?
SIP employs a staff of professionals dedicated to providing physicians the tools and support necessary for the continued success of private practice in the greater Sacramento area. When a physician has a question – about anything from billing to improving patient satisfaction -- the SIP team is ready and available to help.
How is SIP Aligned With Sutter Health?
As one of the nation's leading not-for-profit networks of community-based healthcare providers, Sutter Health delivers high-quality care throughout Northern California. Sutter Health supports more than two dozen acute care hospitals as well as physician organizations; medical research facilities; region-wide home health, hospice and occupational health networks; and long-term care centers.
Through Sutter Physicians Alliance (SPA), local Sutter-affiliated medical groups, including SIP, are aligned into a single network. When a patient selects a SIP primary care physician, he also gains access to more than 800 SPA specialists in the region, Sutter’s advanced medical technology, five conveniently located hospitals and many physicians offices in Northern California.
